Prediction: What Will Happen to Probable MVP Winner Nikola Jokic's Moments

We haven’t yet had the chance to see how a player winning a major award will influence their moments, both in the short-term and the long-term. Award season, however, is just around the corner, so let’s take a look at what might happen to the winner of arguably the biggest one there is – the league MVP.

Nikola Jokic is currently the runaway favourite to take it out, and to be honest it’s hard to imagine any other result. The big Serbian’s numbers are truly insane – 26.2 points on 56.8% shooting and 41.4% from downtown, 10.9 rebounds and 8.6 assists. Denver is not the best team in the league but they’re still comfortably good enough for those numbers to justify Jokic winning MVP, so assuming that comes to fruition, what will it do to his moments?

My feeling is that when it’s announced, there’ll be a boom in Jokic purchases. Everyone will want a piece of him. I’ve personally stocked up on a couple of his moments before that happens, and it seems like I’m not the only one. His Series 2 base set dunk, for example, was hovering around the $40-50 mark for a long time, but in late April as his MVP case has become increasingly hard to argue against, that’s jumped up to over $60. It’s the same for his Seeing Stars moment. Low-key brag – I flipped Embiid’s SS for Jokic when Jokic was marginally cheaper, and already they’ve flipped places and the gap is widening.

Jokic has 14 moments all up, so to avoid sending you to sleep I won’t go through them all. Some of the others are also a little trickier to get a handle on as they’re significantly more expensive and don’t sell anywhere near as often as the above two, so there’s a lot less data. If you’re looking for something more on the affordable side, however, now might be the time to snare a couple of Jokic moments.

It’s hard to say what will happen in the longer term, but I would assume that when we’re well into the future and looking back at moments from the early days of Topshot, moments of a player in an MVP season will be worth a lot more. Assuming Jokic wins, compare his 2021 moments to those of Embiid – both will probably have amazing careers, Embiid might win an MVP or two later on, but in terms of their 2021 Seeing Stars moments, for example, I would imagine Jokic’s will be worth a lot more.

My guess is this – Jokic’s cheaper moments will continue to trickle upwards as it becomes increasingly apparent that he’s going to win MVP. As we’ve seen already, the Topshot community gets a little excited when moments start to dramatically change in price, so when it’s announced we will all go a little crazy and prices will skyrocket far beyond what they reasonably should. That will then be a great time to sell – the prices will likely eventually correct a little and drop somewhat, at which point you can buy back in, make a little profit, and enjoy watching the price of your MVP moments creep upwards over the coming years.
