Today’s Chart: NBA Top Shot Number of Moments by Play (as of April 2021)

Context:

Serial number, rarity, series number and player undoubtedly are the fundamental key metrics that determine a moment’s valuation. However, is it important to consider play type as a secondary factor.

Key Insights/Observations:

  • Dunks are the lion share of type of play, making up 38% of all minted moments; intuitively this makes sense since dunks are the most exciting type of play and gets a crowd roaring

  • Layups rank second and make up 15% of all minted moments; layups are usually much less exciting than 3-pointers or even blocks, so it’s interesting that there are more of them being minted. Possibly driven by the sheer number of layups is greater than 3-pointer or blocks and wider range of players with a layup moment.

  • Steals and Handles each make up 4-5% of all minted moments; this comes as no surprise as the number of players that have moment-worthy handles is much lower e.g. mostly point guards, and steals per game are easily the smallest in number in terms of major stats tracked.

Questions to consider for future analysis:

  • What is the hierarchy of play type with regards to a moment’s valuation?

  • How does a player’s position and play style influence their differing play type moments? For example, a Giannis dunk is highly likely to have more value than a Giannis assist. However, is a Chris Paul, the future Hall-of-Famer point guard, Dunk more valuable than a Chris Paul assist for which he is more known for?
